Parents and teachers shared the emotions of GCSE results day as Withington’s Year 11 pupils marked this key step on their educational journey today. With 47.4% of exam results achieved at grade 9 and 70.4% of grades achieved at grade 8 or higher, there were hugs, smiles and tears of joy as the Upper Fifth opened their envelopes and took in their well-earned achievements.

Withington’s Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Haslam, said: “We are so very proud of each and every one of our pupils. With a return to the pre-pandemic approach to this year’s public examinations, we must not forget that these pupils were also impacted during several key years of their education by the dramatic adjustments to everyday life that we all had to make.

“Supported by our excellent staff team, they did not lose focus and they have worked hard to fulfil their potential. Their reward is a confident continuation of their life’s journey, with the vast majority choosing to do so at Withington’s Sixth Form.”

The Withington Upper Fifth of 2023 achieved 89% of grades at grade 7 and above and include nine students who achieved 10 grade 9s. Over a quarter of the cohort achieved all grade 8 or 9 across nine of more GCSE subjects. Our next Lower Sixth will be joined by a group of new students from schools across Greater Manchester and beyond, who have also excelled in their GCSE examinations.

“It is a characteristic of Withington pupils that they contribute so much more than academic talent to the life of our school, and this group is no exception. Students have made their mark on both the stage and the sports field, they have contributed to the school’s extensive partnership programme and half of the cohort have been involved in working towards their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. It is a pleasure to work with them,” said Mrs Haslam.

Head of Year, Mr Mark Williams, expressed his pride in the achievements of the 96 Year 11 pupils. “I am immensely proud of the Upper Fifth’s achievements this year. From their exceptional performances in national netball competitions and their high-quality debates in Model United Nations events, to some stand-out musical performances and their truly fantastic GCSE results; they are an inspiring group and I wish them every success as they move into post-16 study.”
