DofE Gold Qualifying in the Yorkshire Dales

Twenty WGS Sixth Form students have completed their Gold Qualifying Expedition in the North Yorkshire Dales.

Beginning at Ingleton on Wednesday morning, the girls hiked to Stainforth via a very challenging climb over the top of Ingleborough – the second highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales. The going was tough due to very high winds and it being very wet underfoot, yet all girls arrived at camp cheerful and elated by their conquest of the mountain.

Thursday saw the longest walk – more than 50 miles – which was from Stainforth to Kettlewell. Everyone certainly slept well, but woke up Friday morning to a sharp frost and frozen gas canisters!

The final walk was in glorious weather from Kettlewell to Grassington.

Dr Madden said: “This group of girls was absolutely fantastic. I was so proud, especially, of their teamwork and support of one another throughout, but also by their constant high spirits, despite the walks being made so much more demanding by the boggy ground. Very well done to everyone!”
