Winter Sports

At the end of the Winter sports season of 2018-19, our small school was proven to have big talent! The U16 Netball team were National Bronze Medallists and there were a string of successes across all age groups in Netball, Hockey and Lacrosse.

This was followed up in 2019-20 with a very successful season of sport in the Winter and Spring terms.

There are numerous opportunities for girls to participate in Netball, Hockey and Lacrosse. During PE lessons, at lunchtime and after-school practices and to represent the School in fixtures and tournaments.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse is a long-standing tradition at Withington. We remain one of only two schools in Manchester and one of only eight schools in the North of England who offer the sport both within the PE curriculum and through extracurricular activities. Lacrosse lessons and practices are led by coaches who are England International Lacrosse players. We also have support from local clubs, providing excellent school to club links. We have historically had a high number of girls representing Withington at County, Regional North and within the England system, and this tradition continues. County representation for both Lancashire and Cheshire squads is a regular achievement at both U15 and U18 level, with girls progressing to represent North of England squads and some attaining the ultimate accolade of representing their country in Internationals.

Withington Lacrosse teams had an excellent season in 2019 with the highlight being the Senior Team finishing top 16 in the UK at the National Schools Tournament. The future of Lacrosse is looking bright at Withington with great results at the North Schools Tournament: the U13s finished runners up and the U12s were third for their age group.

Netball

Netball is extremely popular at Withington and there are many options to play either at a recreational or competitive level – or somewhere in-between. There are House Netball tournaments each year when the courts are packed with girls playing or supporting Scott, Lejeune, Herford or Simon!

Withington has an outstanding record in regional and national netball competitions, being INSC National Champions at U13 and U15 in recent years and U16 Bronze Medallists in National Schools Netball in 2019. Also in 2019, the U15 team were Greater Manchester Champions and, in the South Manchester Schools Netball League involving seven schools, Withington emerged in first place in three age groups out of six, and in the other three age groups, were second, third and fourth. In 2020, Withy teams once again punched well above their weight in the South Manchester League, with five of our six teams finishing winners or runners up in a league of eight local schools. The U12 (who were
unbeaten for the whole season) and U16 teams finished top of their league and the U13s, U14s and U18s in second place.

In September 2019, the Year 8 and 9 Netball teams competed at the GSA Masterclass Tournament at Condover Hall – a two-day competition involving numerous girls’ independent schools. Both teams reached their respective finals with the Year 8s winning theirs and the Year 9s finishing runners up.

Hockey

Hockey is ever-popular at Withington and we field teams in all age groups. There are also many opportunities to play extracurricular hockey and in PE lessons

The 2019 U13 Hockey Team were runners up in the North West Round of the National Schools Tournament.

Sports Tours

Sports tours are organised every couple of years, the most recent ones being a Netball trip to Malta in 2018 and a Lacrosse tour to America in 2016, when 23 Withington girls travelled from Washington to New York taking on local schools. The girls played a total of six games over the two weeks as well as seeing famous sights and spending time with host families. The tour gave girls the experience of playing lacrosse in America as well as experiencing the culture and American schooling along the way. Withington have had two girls win scholarships to study and play lacrosse in America in recent years, an excellent achievement for the girls. The next trip will be a Hockey and Netball tour to South Africa in 2021.
