PE is a core subject for all pupils and is a key part of our pupils’ school experience. A wide range of opportunities is offered to enable all girls to develop their skills and confidence, both within curriculum lessons and through the outstanding extra-curricular provision. Our aim is that there is something to inspire everyone, whether their interest is in performance sport, recreation or physical wellbeing.
Sports offered in Years 7-9 are:
As they move up through the school, we offer students more diverse opportunities for physical education to help instil in them a lifelong love for health and exercise. Students can opt into different pathways:
Sixth Formers have use of the fitness suite in the morning, after school and at lunchtime.
We’re incredibly proud of our students and their sporting achievements. Our Senior teams consistently compete in national and regional finals across a range of sports including netball, hockey, lacrosse, athletics and tennis. Our Under 15 netball team are current National Champions and our Under 14 lacrosse team are recent National Schools Champions.
Many of our students from Year 7 to Sixth Form compete at county level in netball, hockey, lacrosse and football. Currently several Senior and Sixth Form students are part of national pathways in netball, hockey and lacrosse. Students in Years 11-13 also represent Scotland or Wales in lacrosse at Under 20 level. All elite athletes are supported with their training and development by Withington PE staff.
Our sporting facilities include a large, modern Sports Hall, floodlit all-weather pitch, fitness suite, yoga/dance studio, gymnasium, netball courts and a large sports field.
WGS Sports Online means that information about our sports fixtures can be at your fingertips.
Given the many fixtures and competitions Withington takes part in, our online sports information site helps with organisation and communication, as well as giving match details and results updates.
Sports tours allow Withington pupils to develop their sporting skills, gain a richer understanding of other countries and make connections with young people from different cultures. Destinations have included a netball tour to Malta and a lacrosse tour to the USA, as well as in the UK. Our most recent tour to South Africa was a great success, enabling our students to make connections with other young people through sport.
We have established links with a number of clubs including Timperley Lacrosse Club, Trafford Netball and Kingsway Power Netball Club. Withington has hosted camps and clinics run by England Lacrosse and Scotland Lacrosse and the Scotland Lacrosse Senior squad and England Lacrosse U20 squad have both used our facilities for their training.
