Miss Marjorie Hulme | Withington Girls' School

Miss Marjorie Hulme

February 1, 2024

When we reflect on the history of our school and the people who have made it the place of outstanding learning and empowering community it is today, there are certain individuals whose contributions are particularly significant. One of these people is Miss Marjorie Hulme, former Withington Headmistress, who has died this week at the age of 101.

Miss Hulme was Headmistress of Withington Girls’ School for 24 years from 1961 until 1985. During that time, the school continued to flourish thanks to Miss Hulme’s wisdom, inspiring leadership and unwavering dedication to her pupils and staff.

As well as overseeing major building projects, Miss Hulme was instrumental in establishing the WGS Trust, thus enabling more girls to benefit from the opportunity of a Withington education. Thanks to Miss Hulme’s foresight, our Bursary programme, re-named during 2022 in her honour, is now one of the cornerstones of our school.

Miss Hulme was an example to us all and we will remember her with much affection and respect. We shall recognise all that she did for our school at our Founders’ Day in March.
