The earliest we welcome girls to Withington is Year 3 (age 7). We also welcome pupils in Years 4 and 5, a small number of places each year may also be available for Year 6 entry.
Register your daughter’s details with us to ensure that you are kept up to date with relevant admissions information, including opportunities to visit.
We strongly recommend that you visit us as a family to learn more about a Withington education. Our Head of Juniors offers personal tours and we host several events in the Autumn term for prospective Junior School girls and their families. These include Taster Days and Whole School Open Events.
Applications for September 2025 are open!
To apply for a place in the Junior School for September 2025, you will need to complete the online application, submit the required paperwork and pay the £50 registration fee by the closing date.
We ask that you inform us of any disability or special educational need your daughter may have. This enables us to ensure that the application procedure is accessible for your daughter and that we can cater adequately for her should an offer of a place be made.
There is limited financial assistance in the Junior School, available for Years 5 & 6 only.
If you are applying for financial assistance you must indicate your interest in a bursary at the time of completing the application. You will then receive a link to a confidential online bursary application form. This is processed and managed by Bursary Assessment Associates.
We are unable to accept applications for bursary funding made at a later stage due to the allocation of funds.
For all key dates please see our admissions timetable.
Entry to Withington’s Junior School is by assessment on a Saturday in January, ready for admission in the following September.
The whole aim of the assessments is to test your daughter’s ability to think for herself. It is not necessary, or even helpful, for her to be heavily tutored, as this will not help us to discover her true potential. There are no sample papers as the English and Mathematics Assessments will be similar to work that the girls usually do at school.
Your daughter will be assessed in English, Maths and reading and she will also complete a short, taught task. She will spend half a day at Withington for the assessment and to gain a feel for our school.
Whilst this is a unique experience for your daughter, we have a wealth of experience in running our entrance assessment day. The morning is as informal as possible and we do everything to make sure she is happy and relaxed. Your daughter may ask questions, although she cannot get help with the answers!
As part of the admissions process, and with your permission, we may contact your daughter’s current school to request a school report or reference. There are no formal interviews for the Junior School.
The following guides indicate what each girl should be capable of at the time of assessment: Entrance Assessment Guides
Offers of a place will be made within two weeks of your daughter sitting the assessment. If your daughter receives an offer, you will have three weeks in which to respond and a deposit of £250 is needed to secure her place. If your daughter does not receive an offer of a place, you are welcome to ask for feedback.
In the Summer term, you and your daughter will have the opportunity to attend an Induction Day to meet the Head of Juniors and her class teacher.
We know that moving school is a big step, so we aim to make this transition as smooth as possible. Your daughter may feel a little nervous about her new adventure but be assured that there are lots of people here to help and she will feel at home in no time.
