Over half of GCSE grades at Withington are top grade

The long wait was finally over as Year 11 pupils at Withington Girls’ School collected their GCSE results and opened them in front of their families and teachers. With an impressive 53.8% of results achieved at the elite grade 9 and four in five (80.6%) at grade 8 (equivalent to A* in the previous GCSE grading system) or higher, however, the smiles and happy tears were understandable.

While progression to Sixth Form at Withington is a given for Year 11 pupils, the majority of whom will continue on to Withington Sixth Form, the day represents a significant milestone and, according to Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Haslam, “… these outstanding results position our pupils to move on to their A Levels with confidence and a sense of excitement about the two years that lie ahead.

“As ever, our excellent staff team has worked with each and every pupil, both academically and pastorally, to ensure they receive the support and guidance needed to achieve their goals.”

The Withington Upper Fifth of 2024 achieved 93.1% of results at grade 7 (equivalent to A in the previous GCSE grading system) and above and include 11 students who achieved straight grade 9s. Around 42% of the cohort achieved all grades 8 or 9 across nine of more GCSE subjects. Mrs Haslam highlights that academic accomplishment is just one of the talents evidenced by this group of pupils. “Our Upper Fifth excel in so many spheres – we have national netball champions amongst the group, as well as superb musicians, singers, actors and artists. Two of the group could not attend today as they are currently representing Scotland in the U20 World Lacrosse Championships in Hong Kong.”

Withington Lower Sixth for 2024-25 will be joined by a group of new students from schools across Greater Manchester and beyond, who have also excelled in their GCSE examinations.

Open Days for entry to Withington Girls’ School will be held on Thursday 7th November and Saturday 9th November and the Sixth Form Information Evening will take place on Wednesday 9th October 2024. Find out more information about opportunities to visit: Visit Withington This Autumn
