50th Anniversary of the WGS Trust

50th Anniversary of the WGS Trust and the Marjorie Hulme Bursary Fund

2026 marks a very special milestone for our school – the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the WGS Trust and our Bursary Fund. Over the years, financial support has helped so many young women to take up their place at Withington and go on to achieve incredible things.

Bursary support has been part of Withington for such a long time, many people don’t realise that this is not the case for all independent schools. In 1976, with the loss of the Direct Grant imminent, Miss Hulme and the Governors showed amazing foresight by taking action to ensure that Withington’s ethos of equality, opportunity and diversity would continue. We think that’s something worth celebrating and we hope that you do too.

Throughout the year, we’ll be hearing from 50 individuals, one for each year that the bursary fund has been running. We have some wonderful stories so far from current and former bursary recipients, alumnae, donors, current and former parents, staff and governors and trustee

50 Voices for 50 Years

Giving Day – Thursday 18th June 2026

On this day, the whole school community will be coming together for Giving Day, raising as much as we can for the Marjorie Hulme Bursary Fund.

In 1976, one of the key fundraising events was a whole-school sponsored walk which raised well over £2,000. To bring our celebrations full circle, we’ll be hosting another whole-school sponsored walk, connecting past and present. In the next few months, we’ll be sharing details on how you can show your support for our pupils and help us mark this anniversary in a meaningful way. Together we can make a difference by donating and through celebrating 50 years of community and opportunity.
