Golf comes to Withington
As part of the Girls Golf Rocks campaign, England Golf and the Golf Foundation provided taster sessions for our Senior School pupils. Sporting opportunities are in their plenty at Withington – netball, lacrosse, tennis, hockey are all favourite choices, however golf was a new game to so many.
Local professional golfer, Dave Cullen, led the sessions which took place during PE lessons and free periods for the Sixth Form. He introduced the basics of golf from holding a club, body positioning, and most importantly the swing. Progress was soon to be had during each lesson and there were some very successful swings landing far across the field. The furthest ball was recorded after each class and a record was kept during the week. Talia in Year 8 set the standard high with a new (and first) school record of 80 yards, congratulations.
The Girls Golf Rocks campaign aims to introduce golf in a fun and friendly way and ultimately encourage more women into the sport. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part.
