Junior Sport – Spring Term 2019

Pop Lacrosse Champions!

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 Pop Lacrosse team (the only all-girls team in the tournament), who won through numerous rounds to become Greater Manchester Pop Lacrosse Champions. In the group stage, they won all 4 of their matches, qualifying for the Championship Round in which they won one (7-1 vs St Mary’s) and lost one (4-5 vs Hale Prep) – enough to put them through to the semi-finals where they won though in a very close match (7-6) vs Mellor Primary School.  In the final, they met Hale Prep again and the girls were fired up and ready to go.

In the final, they met Hale Prep. A combination of determination, teamwork and outstanding defending took them to a 7-3 victory making them Champions of Greater Manchester and heading to the National Finals in June.

Coach Mrs Roberts said; “The team got better and better as the day went on. Teamwork and team spirit were amazing throughout the tournament. They showed real grit and determination when faced with some very strong, mixed teams. Well done also to the four Year 10 Young Leaders from Withington who were excellent role models – officiating and scoring throughout the tournament.”

Netball

Terra Nova Tournament Silver Medallists

Very well done to our Y6 netballers who won six out of seven of their matches at the Terra Nova U11 Netball Tournament, finishing Silver Medallists and scoring 57 goals in the process! Brilliant play by our girls with fantastic teamwork and 100% effort put into every match. Athletics Junior girls had a great day at the AJIS indoor Athletics event in January. They all enjoyed it and were thrilled to come away with seven medals!

Table Tennis

Table Tennis is a relatively new sport at Withington and our U11 Table Tennis squad took part in their first-ever major competition: they travelled to Blackburn to compete in the regional round of the National Schools Table Tennis Tournament. And what a brilliant debut it was! They won through to the third round and travelled to Grantham on 10th February for the next round, but unfortunately just missed progressing even further. The tournament is overseen by Table Tennis England and involves schools from all over the country. Many thanks to our coach David Hulme and to the girls’ parents for the fantastic support!
