DofE in the Summer Term

We had wind and rain for part of our Gold DofE practice expedition over the weekend of 4th-6th May in the Yorkshire Dales, but it brightened up towards the end. Beginning at Staling Busk and ending at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the six participants, with the group name The Survivors, were very strong on navigation and worked brilliantly together as a team. They maintained an impressively fast pace and arrived home in time for afternoon sunshine on the final day. All the girls were excellent company and maintained a positive attitude throughout.

The Bronze Award Qualifying expedition on June 11th and 12th saw 65 members of Lower Fifth spend two days walking in the West Pennines. They walked between Horwich and Darwen, camping overnight. We had thirteen groups of 4-7 girls, who impressed the assessor with their enthusiasm, teamwork and camp-craft skills. Their navigation was not entirely faultless but everyone made it to the end. Well done to Who Nose, Made in Tents and Wrong Direction for coming in first and a special commendation to Intents Campers for the greatest improvement after a rather challenging first day.

The Silver Practice expedition on 2nd- 3rd July was from Whaley Bridge to Hayfield via overnight camping in Edale. We had 40 girls in eight groups and all completed and did very well. Rain overnight and with low cloud and wind on Wednesday meant we used our short route on day two.
