In May, the Third Form visited Castleton in Derbyshire and focused on the impacts of limestone on this beautiful landscape! After observing stalactites and stalagmites in the underground world of limestone caverns, all girls sketched the stunning limestone gorge known as Winnat's Pass.

The sunshine made our human investigations in the village equally successful as the tourists were happy to stop and be interviewed. The girls learnt how the quaint limestone cottages and shops selling either precious stones from the caverns or outdoor gear to explore the limestone plateaux, are one of the key features to attract visitors.

The day resulted in all pupils appreciating how important limestone is, not only in creating this unusual wild landscape but also in ensuring the success of a local, thriving tourist industry.
