Girls Go Green!

Update: 22nd November 2012

Stop Press!

We are delighted to announce that Withington has been successful in its application for the Eco Schools Green Flag Award.

Requiring renewal every two years, our assessor read our application and completed a tour of the school yesterday, meeting the Eco Warriors committee and other pupils, as well as members of staff around school.

As ever, our pupils were great ambassadors for the school and impressed her with their enthusiasm.

Thanks to all – and keep up the good work this 'Switch Off Fortnight'.

Sweet Wrapper Dresses

This year Eco Warriors took the theme of ‘Food’ for Girls Go Green Week. This touched on various aspects of the Eco Schools Award scheme, such as healthy eating, global perspective and waste management. The issues associated with global food problems were raised in assembly and PSHCE lessons and the school raised over £90 for Mary’s Meals, a charity which feeds children in developing countries at their place of education.

The Classics Club copied the Romans and made puddings without using refined sugar, while there were opportunities for Junior and Senior girls to make purses from juice cartons. Upper II made rhubarb crumble from their harvest of the school vegetable plot.

A whole school effort was made to recycle our sweet wrappers and the results could be seen worn by the presenters at the Charity Fashion show!
