WiGS4Life is back!
Posted 14th July 2012
Today in Paris – Bastille Day – Head of History Ms Jane Maher completed a 280-mile cycle ride from London in aid of the Christie Hospital in Manchester.
Ms Maher, who conceived and organised the Withingon 'WiGS4Life' fun runs which over the years have raised nearly £10,000 for The Christie, had wanted to do something to raise money for The Christie and when she saw the opportunity to raise funds cycling through landscape steeped in the history of Britain and France and then arriving in Paris on Bastille Day, she knew this was the vehicle for her!
Congratulations to Ms Maher on completing the challenge. If you would still like to donate in tribute of her success, please visit her Just Giving webpage where you can donate safely and securely.

Not one to rest on her laurels Ms Maher and her Form, LVIM (soon to be UVIM!) have now got plans underway for the next WiGS4Life fun run so get your diaries and calendars out and put a HUGE ring around SUNDAY 16th SEPTEMBER 2012. Why? This is the date when Withington Girls' School will be hosting our WiGS for Life 5km run!
Since 1994, Race for Life has become Cancer Research's flagship fundraising event. Women have raised £457 million through the Race for Life. We add our contribution to this phenomenal record by hosting WiGS for Life where all money raised goes to a local cancer charity – The Christie, Manchester.
The run will take start and finish at school and participants are invited to skip, jog, walk or crawl around a pre-arranged 5km course, which will be marshalled and supervised throughout. All finishers will receive a medal to celebrate their achievement. The entrance fee will go directly to The Christie along with all of the sponsorship money raised. The entry fee is £8.00. Tee shirts will be available to buy on the day with the race logo and please feel free to wear one from previous years! An extra-special addition this year will be hoodies which can be ordered on the day.
In the past this has been a women-only event but this year we have made a few adjustments and hope to encourage some male participation! So … there will also be:
· a ‘Lads n Dads' café where refreshments will be served by your male relatives and friends
· a ‘mini Olympics'
· and a Penalty shoot-out competition for all those too little (or too male) to do the actual race.
The money raised on all these activities will go straight to The Christie.
In the spirit of the event, dressing up is encouraged! The theme is, quite literally, ‘Wigs' so we hope to see Withington Women (and men) strutting their stuff, donning Amy Winehouse's beehive or Elvis' quiff. The choice is up to you, but we hope that our attention-grabbing hair will not only create some fantastic photos, but will help to raise awareness of the event and for Cancer Research.
You can enter online this year and entries received in advance of the day will get two FREE raffle tickets with the chance of winning some fabulous prizes!
Click here to download an Entry Form.
You may also enter by contacting office@withington.manchester.sch.uk and an entry and sponsor form will be sent to you. Further information will be sent the first week back after the summer break.
We hope you will support what should be a really fun and worthwhile venture!
