Withington’s young artists are doing their bit to brighten
the lives of patients and staff at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital –
‘bit’ being the operative word, for they are creating a huge mosaic picture to
decorate the hospital’s Harrington Building. The 8ft-long artwork, depicting a
rainbow and a colourful landscape, is due to be located in the hospital in June
or July; meanwhile girls of all ages at the School are helping to complete the
picture.

The Art Department has run two very successful creative practical
mosaic workshops at the Harrington Building involving patients, their parents,
staff and doctors in contributing to the mosaic. “It was excellent to involve
so many different people in the project, from School and the hospital, so that
all can be proud that they have played an important part in such an exciting
art venture,” said Head of Art, Mrs Ruth Fildes. “The girls and staff in School
continue to work on the mosaic as part of lunchtime Art clubs. It’s like a
giant jigsaw puzzle and girls add pieces when they drop by the studio, which is
always open.”
