United we stand…

Withington’s season of Model United Nations conferences at Bath, Stockport and Haberdashers in Hertfordshire climaxed with the staging of WiMUN 2 on June 27th.

In this second Withington Hosted Model United Nations Conference, more than 150 delegates from eight participating schools – including one from Banbury, Oxfordshire – took part. Together with Chairs, Secretaries and the Press corps, the headcount totalled more than 200 people contributing to the success of the day. The attendance figure was especially impressive given that the event was competing with what turned out to be England’s final appearance at the football World Cup Finals.

The Conference comprised seven Committees focusing on Human Rights, Disarmament, Health and Youth, the Middle East, Policy, Ecology and the Environment and Africa. The standard of debate was impressive
throughout and the delegates, some as young as 13, adopted a very positive attitude.

Withington delegates representing the USA, Canada, North Korea, Syria, Sudan and Australia scooped 13 Commendations and three Highly Commended awards.

Co-ordinator Ms Jane Maher also paid tribute to the Chairs from the Lower Sixth and Upper Fifth who wrote briefing papers and resolutions and to the Press who produced an excellent glossy paper. She reserved special thanks for the Sixth Formers who took on the roles of Head of Administration and Secretary General.
